LAS SESIONES PROGRESIVAS DE JOHN PEEL EN LA BBC parte 1

John Peel

El primer programa que John Peel hizo para BBC Radio 1 se llamó Top Gear, que presentaba junto al antiguo periodista de Radio London, Pete Drummond. Salió por primera vez al aire el 1 de octubre de 1967, sábado a las dos de la tarde, y prometía sesiones con los mejores nombres del negocio musical. John consiguió el trabajo por los pelos ya que los altos directivos de BBC pensaban que él era un caso bastante perdido. Pero el productor de Top Gear, veterano en la BBC durante diez años, Bernie Andrews, confió plenamente en Peel y exigió que fuera él el que presentara el espacio. Andrews se convirtió en el defensor de John y convenció a los jefes de la cadena británica para que le dieran la oportunidad de quedarse en la emisora –si bien es cierto que con un contrato de seis meses de duración-, aunque su estilo tenía pocas posibilidades con el estilo convencional de la BBC.

De forma inmediata John y Bernie comenzaron a contratar sesiones de artistas que Peel consideraba que valían la pena. Así The Peel Sessions en Top Gear atrajeron los gustos de músicos como Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Beefheart y Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.

Las Peel Sessions, tan famosas como el mismo hombre que las bautiza, nacieron.

John adoptó a Top Gear como su propio programa, con una política de negociar una nueva libertad para tocar aquello que el músico gustara cuando quisiera.

He aquí mi pequeño tributo a este hombre que murió en esta misma fecha hace ocho años. Simplemente voy a enumerar las actuaciones de aquellos grupos afines al rock progresivo que pasaron por su programa, indicando los temas que tocaron y quiénes fueron sus intérpretes.
