Top Gear estaba atrayendo a audiencias y las Peel Sessions mostraban conciertos en directo de Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Joni Mitchell, Soft Machine, Joe Cocker, The Faces, Genesis y Free, entre muchos otros.

Con la explosión de una sorprendente música que estaba siendo escuchada por millones de personas, los festivales empezaron a instaurarse en Gran Bretaña.

John fue uno de los pocos que asistieron a Glastonbury Fayre en 1971, ahora conocido como el Glastonbury Festival. Uno de los recuerdos más queridos por John fue su asistencia en el Glastonbury Tor junto al cantante de T. Rex, Marc Bolan.

En octubre, John hizo su primera y, posiblemente, su más infame aparición en el Top of the Pops. The Faces, liderados por Rod Stewart con Ronnie Wood en la guitarra eran buenos amigos y le pidieron si podía imitar que estaba tocando la mandolina mientras ellos ejecutaban “Maggie May”. El grupo tocó el tema con Peel en el fondo y terminaron jugando al fútbol en el escenario.
