Radio London

Si hace cincuenta años en Gran Bretaña querías escuchar música pop tenías que buscar el dial adecuado del transistor para tener la posibilidad de sintonizar las llamadas emisoras piratas. Éstas estaban situadas en barcos o estructuras marinas en alta mar, justo fuera del límite territorial británico y, por lo tanto, fuera del alcance de las restricciones de radiodifusión inglesa.

La primera de todas aquellas fue Radio Caroline, pero no fue la que tuvo mayor éxito. Ese honor le correspondió a Radio Londres. “Big L” fue el primer formato que se pudo escuchar en Gran Bretaña, el primero en incorporar jingles cantados, en contar con boletines de noticias y, en definitiva, conformó la plantilla de lo que hoy damos por hecho en un programa de radio dedicado a la música.

John Peel había trabajado en la radio americana y esa experiencia fue suficiente para conseguir trabajo en Radio Londres. También se proporcionó a sí mismo un nuevo nombre: nacido como John Ravenscroft, se quitó la ‘s’ para la radio americana. Por sugerencia de una secretaria de Radio Londres, adoptó la identidad que utilizaría el resto de su vida: John Peel.

John se unió a Radio London en marzo de 1967 y suplía al locutor que descansaba y presentaba el programa London after Midnight. Cada locutor reflejaba sus gustos musicales y John pronto comprendió que ni sus colegas ni sus jefes prestaban atención a lo que radiaba. Cada noche lanzaba a las ondas en el programa que el creó, The Perfumed Garden, lo mejor de la nueva música que emergía de América e Inglaterra: blues clásico, pop y todo aquello que entraba en sus gustos.

El 15 de agosto de 1968, Radio London, acuciada por las presiones de la legislación del gobierno, anunció su cierre a las tres de la tarde. Así que a medianoche del día anterior, John comenzó su último Perfumed Garden, alargando su emisión hasta las cinco y media de la mañana en vez de cerrar a las dos como era habitual.
